Seattle hosts next chapter of independent bookseller day

Seattle's independent booksellers are joining forces in a national celebration of books, reading, and the comforts and joys of visiting small, independent book stores.

At least 25 stores are participating in Seattle Independent Bookstore Day next month. Shops all around Seattle are featuring a variety of fun book-related activities such as visits from authors, scavenger hunts, live music, food, and contests. Many shops are also offering exclusive books that you can only get from book shops – not online.

It is all part of National Independent Bookstore Day, which began as a national celebration in 2015. It came off the heels of a successful Northern California bookstore day in 2014. Seattle bookstores quickly joined the movement to showcase what they do best - “build human connections through physical books.” This builds on Seattle's already international reputation as a UNESCO-designated “city of literature.”

Seattle's bookstore day features a Passport Challenge, where readers and customers are given passports to get stamped at participating bookstores. Customers who get a passport stamped at every location are crowned Grand Champions, and are eligible for 25% discounts at every Bookstore Day retailer for one year. The number of Grand Champions has increased from 42, when it began to more than 630 in 2019.

Retailers involved in celebrations such as this can benefit from the services offered at local print shops, such as special signage and brochure printing.

Seattle Independent Bookstore Day will be on April 25 (the last Saturday of April). Each store chooses its own hours of operation.
