Seattle celebrates Asian-Pacific heritage this spring

The Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration is taking place next month in Seattle. It is presented by Festal and the Asian-Pacific Directors Coalition.

Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States each May and is an opportunity for many communities to showcase local cultures and foods.

The celebration is set to feature many live musical performances, visual arts displays from local and national artists, demonstrations of various skills, and hands-on activities for people of all ages. There will be lion dances, drumming, and youth drill teams. Traditional games and martial arts demonstrations will take place, and the public will also have the opportunity to purchase samples of a variety of foods from countries like the Philippines and Japan.

One of the most popular events will likely be the Alan Sugiyama Hum Bow Eating Contest. Contestants compete to eat the most hum bow, which is a steamed, filled bun similar to bread.

The event will bring together Seattle residents of all cultures to learn more about their neighbors, or to celebrate their ancestry. It may be advertised using products obtained from a local flyer printing company.

The Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration will be held at the Seattle Center Armory on May 6 from 11:45 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free of charge. Call 206-684-7200 for more information.
