What's Happening in Seattle, WA…

Donation from rock legends helps Seattle tackle homelessness

Seattle-based alternative rock group Pearl Jam, along with partners of its recent ‘Home Shows’, has donated a seven-figure sum to help combat homelessness in the city.

Two sold-out Pearl Jam shows took place in Seattle last month, but aside from being an opportunity for fans to listen to classics like ‘Given to Fly’ and ‘Alive’, and to stock up on band merchandise and promotional products, the shows were set up to raise funds for those without a home.

On September 27, two members of the band – Stone Gossard and Mike McCready – were at YouthCare’s Orion Center as a donation of $1.3m was awarded. Nearly half of this ($600K) was raised from the shows themselves, and the rest came from show partners.

The vast majority of the donation will be put towards an effort to end homelessness in the Seattle and King County area by the end of the decade. This initiative is being overseen by homelessness agency All Home. Funds are also being put towards homelessness measures in nearby areas like Yakima, Pierce, and Spokane.

The band members themselves had a say on how these funds were allocated, although they took advice from a board made up of philanthropists and professionals in homelessness service provision.

Expecting to release their 11th studio album next year, Pearl Jam reported last month that the band has raised approximately $11m in total towards homelessness initiatives.
