Early commercial history
Pflugerville is approximately 15 miles from Austin, of which it is a suburb. The first settler of European descent to come to the area is thought to be Henry Pfluger, a farmer who left Germany to get away from the Prussian War. He purchased land from his brother-in-law, John Liese, who had come to the area before Pfluger, and began farming, growing such crops as sugar cane, sweet potatoes, beans, rye, wheat, and corn. He also raised cattle.
The community was officially established when William Bohls set up a post office and general store in his home in 1860. He named the new town in honor of Pfluger. The community remained small, with only a few hundred residents, until late in the 20th century, when it experienced rapid growth, to the size it is today.
Growth like this also brought businesses of many different kinds. Recent information about Pflugerville reveals that its economy is growing, and that a majority of its residents are homeowners, rather than renters. Subdivisions are under construction, and road improvements are being made. Businesses operating in the city cut across all sectors, with a concentration in agriculture and business services.
