The cemetery, which is located on S. Houston Avenue, is currently owned by the Humble Cemetery Association and has been sitting in disrepair for several years. The Association owned the cemetery for nearly a century until 2002, when the final member passed away. The city has been taking care of minor repairs on the property for years, and the Mayor was behind the move to make the ownership formal. Documents detailing transfers of land often include official Letterheads on them. Mayor Merle Aaron's comments on the takeover were:
“The City of Humble has cared for the Humble Cemetery since 1967. However, it was owned by the cemetery association. Many in the city are unaware that we do not currently own the cemetery or land… this cemetery means a lot to our city and it is important to preserve our pioneering heritage.”
The vote to take over the cemetery was unanimous. The move makes sense because the city repaired the cemetery’s fence in 2006, having been handling the landscaping jobs for decades. A previous attempt was made to transfer ownership in the 1960s, but it was unsuccessful. Now that the transfer is set to happen, the city manager plans to survey the property and go about making improvements such as straightening headstones and preserving certain sites.
