Work resumes on Ocean Boulevard

Ocean Boulevard, one of the main streets in Myrtle Beach, is getting a facelift.

Crews are working on the area between Ninth Avenue North and Second Avenue North, where they are making improvements to the streetscape. These improvements include putting in new sewer and water lines, burying utility lines, putting in pavement and sidewalks, and completing some landscaping. The work will cost approximately $8m.

Mark Kruea, speaking on behalf of Myrtle Beach, noted that the city has already upgraded 53 blocks of Ocean Boulevard, and the seven-block section now undergoing revamping is the last part of the street to be done in the hotel district.

Last week, the southbound lane of the boulevard was closed, which reduced traffic to one lane each way. There is no parking allowed on Ocean Boulevard where crews are working.

Last winter, crews laid conduit and sewer pipes on the west side of Ocean Boulevard, from Fifth Avenue North to Second Avenue North, then switched to the other side. R.H. Moore Co. Inc. is the contractor on the project, and is currently installing underground cables. The finishing touches will be put on the seven blocks next winter, with the roadworks expected to be finished by early 2017. Contractors work in the off-season to keep from interfering with drivers and visitors.

City officials could work alongside a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents, suggesting various routes.
