Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, residents who live on or near Ocean Boulevard are excited and happy about upcoming changes to the area, which they say have been needed for some time.
On December 26, 2016, the Cabana Inn, which was located on 14th Avenue South, was demolished, and there are already plans in the works for the area. The project is a mixed-used development that would be four stories tall, with commercial and retail spaces on the ground floor, and accommodations above. Parking would also be provided in the 32,000 square-foot complex.
The development resembles those that can be found in the Market Common, which opened in 2008 and has seen substantial growth. Paul Green, an area resident, points to the other development as an example of what he believes could happen in his neighborhood. He notes that Market Common is expanding, and bringing new people into the area. It is his hope that a similar development on Ocean Boulevard would result in the same kind of growth.
After some delay and discussion of the project, the final review and the lighting plan were recently approved by the Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board. The building will be called Ocean Escape, and a new site plan now shows the planned sidewalks and landscaping. The building will sport a paint scheme of Caribbean colors. Final approval is up to the Myrtle Beach City Council.
