Shark Wake Park, the first continuous wakeboarding park in Florida, opened June 17, 2016, in Myrtle Beach, according to an article in Myrtle Beach Online. Greg Norman Jr. founded the park, which is located in the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. Norman has been wakeboarding since he was 16, and said Shark Wake is unique, because it allows multiple participants to ride the water simultaneously. Most other parks allow only one person to ride at one time.
Wakeboarding is a sport in which a person rides behind a motorboat on a short, wide board. They may often do acrobatic stunts during their ride, as they cross back and forth over the wake of the boat that's towing them.
At Shark Wake's main course, nine ramps are available to riders who want to ride up and over them, much the same way water skiers take jumps. The highest of the nine, called the “big kicker,” is located near a beer garden and viewing deck, where family and friends can watch the riders.
Away from the nine-ramp tower is a smaller system where beginners can learn the sport, much the same way skiers start on a “bunny hill” before attempting more complex runs.
