Thousands of Myrtle Beach chili lovers spice things up

Myrtle Beach chili lovers had a day to remember at the Chilympics, held in Murrells Inlet earlier this month.

This was the 15th year for the event, formally known as the ‘Lip Rippin’ Chilympics Chili Cook-off’, and for the second straight year, Dead Dog Saloon walked off with the top honors.

The Chilympics is the main fundraiser for the Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, a national organization dedicated to keeping waves and beaches clean, educating the public about issues facing the oceans, and protecting access to beach areas.

Admission to the Chilympics was free, and started at noon on October 12, when more than 40 of the area's best ‘Chilimasters’ made samples of their concoctions available to the public. Categories of the competition included Best Overall, Hottest, Best Theme, and Most Original.

Live music was part of the fun, thanks to appearances by My Goodness, IAMDYNAMITE, and the October Chorus. Chief Kamu's Hula Show also performed for the crowds, and local businesses, artists, craftspeople, and restaurants took part.

Chili sample tickets were $1 each, and attendees were asked to bring canned food, or a non-perishable item, to be donated to South Strand Helping Hand. In addition to the other activities, the event featured an area especially for kids, with soft drinks, food, face painting, and other activities.

The Surfrider Chapter could work with a banner printing company to create suitable outdoor Signs for the next event.
