Renovations planned for Chapin Memorial Park

Myrtle Beach's Chapin Memorial Park will soon have a new look.

Plans call for refreshing the park by taking down several pines and adding sidewalks, flagpoles, fountains, and a stage with shade.

Work is now underway on the renovations, with crews cutting down trees to help “give the park a lighter, more welcome appearance”, according to a post made by Myrtle Beach officials on Facebook in mid-December. The post explains that as the trees grew to maturity, they made the park increasingly dark.

According to Mark Kruea, a spokesman for Myrtle Beach, the city has removed approximately 25 trees thus far. The thinner canopy was deliberately designed to let more sunshine and light into the park. Palm trees, flagpoles, concrete walking paths, and a raised shelter that has a stage for special events are also in the plans.

According to the post, the city will remove some of the older wooden structures and the demolition, plus the new landscaping and paths, will result in a more welcoming, brighter park. A roofed shelter near Kings Highway is due to be demolished, but play structures and the pergola will be left standing. Art in the Park, a local showcase of work by local artists, is held in the park in the spring and fall.
