Novel fundraiser draws horde of horses and riders

The American Heart Association holds an annual fundraiser in Myrtle Beach, and this year more than 1,400 horses came to help the AHA raise $300,000 to fund research into cardiovascular disease.

This is the 34th year for this event, which is five days long. For years, the event has been known as the American Heart Association Jack Monroe Beach Ride, after the Horry County man who began it. The ride is now based at Lakewood Campground, though it was held in other locations before finding its permanent home.

According to AHA representative Kelly Bedtelyon, Jack Monroe had some degree of heart disease, but he also loved horses. He got money together and organized a beach ride, and selected the AHA to receive the money he raised. Monroe ran the fundraiser himself for many years, until it got too big for him to handle. At that point, an AHA staff member came aboard to oversee the event.

The AHA still hosts the ride in honor of Monroe, and this year, started the first Jack Monroe Service Award. The award is given to a ride participant who is a philanthropist, leader, and a good person who supports the AHA. The winner this year was Bob Riddle, who retired from the Myrtle Beach Police Department as an assistant chief.
