Myrtle Beach welcomes Panera Bread

Panera Bread, a popular chain of fast-casual restaurants, is opening a store in Myrtle Beach.

The new restaurant will be located on U.S. 501, next to an existing Starbucks. This will be the first bakery-cafe in the Myrtle Beach region, and the company is constructing a new building to house the operation. The store is located in the Carolina Forest Commons center.

Panera submitted its plans to Horry County in October, and should receive approval soon, according to the county's principal planner, David Schwerd. However, no opening date has been set.

Panera Bread, like Starbucks, is now a gathering place where people meet and work on their laptops while they enjoy fare such as soup in a bread bowl, turkey chili, and breakfast pastries. The company serves vegetarian-fed chicken, and antibiotic-free meat, and uses only ingredients without MSG or trans fat.

Panera Bread began as Au Bon Pain Company in 1981, in the eastern United States. The company grew throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and then bought the Saint Louis Bread Company before rebranding itself as Panera Bread.

When opening day is closer, the diner might consider working with a flyer printing company on a handout to be distributed near the store in the days leading up to the opening. Including a coupon might mean people who have never eaten at Panera decide to visit the store.
