Myrtle Beach to get area's first Aldi

Discount supermarket chain Aldi, which is based in Germany, is opening its first Myrtle Beach locations soon.

According to supermarket spokeswoman Kyrsta Cearley, the stores' locations were chosen by considering factors such as traffic patterns, population density, how close competitors' stores were, and the purchase price of the property. She adds that Aldi wants to be easy for its shoppers to find. Presently, the chain has three other stores in South Carolina: Sumter, Summerville, and Florence.

Cearley notes that Aldi has from 10 to 20 employees at each store, and offers both pay and benefits above those offered at minimum wage. Part-time employees, who work a minimum of 25 hours weekly, have access to health and dental benefits. The chain held hiring events in September, and encourages those who are interested in working for there to check the Aldi website for future opportunities.

One store will be in North Myrtle Beach, on Highway 17 North, and is scheduled to open March 23. A second store in Myrtle Beach's Surfside Beach is on Beaver Run Boulevard, and the opening is expected sometime late in April. A third Aldi is planned for Wild Wind Boulevard and Highway 501, but no opening date has been projected.
