Myrtle Beach school enrollment soars

Coastal Leadership Academy, a Myrtle Beach charter school that first opened last year, has nearly doubled its enrollment.

The Academy had 100 students last year, but this year it will have 160. The facility is a public establishment and is part of South Carolina’s system of charter schools – a status that allows administrators a great deal more freedom to teach as they wish. However, the students must still meet South Carolina’s education standards.

Recently, students were finishing a summer workshop in writing. Ninth-grader Paris Tullock said they were learning to fix mistakes in grammar, as well as getting any extra help they may need before school starts in the fall.

Breanna McDonnel, another ninth-grader, said she was having a tough time at her old school because she didn’t want to just sit and listen to lectures, but instead learn her way. Her parents turned to CLA so Breanna could try her hand at project-based learning.

There are no textbooks at the Academy, and chairs are wheeled so classrooms can be reconfigured easily. The students learn by actively participating in internships, research, discussions, and case studies. By solving problems rather than reading Books, students learn to think critically, tackle the problem and devise a solution.

The Academy could work with brochure printers to create a mailer for residents, explaining the advantages the school offers.
