Despite uncertainty surrounding the eventual use of the building, the Horry County Airport Advisory Committee voted in favor of proceeding with a plan to improve the façade of the terminal at the old Myrtle Beach International Airport.
According to a March 11, 2015 news article, redoing the façade to match that of the new terminal, which opened in 2013, will cost $3.5m. The entire project overall will carry a price tag of more than $10 million, and include landscaping, renovating, and repaving the employee parking lot, as well as opening five additional gates.
The $3.5m for reworking the façade is only slightly higher than the $3.2 million the airport had planned to pull from its reserves to finance the project. The structure is approximately 700 feet in length, and improvements include more bathrooms, including one for families, as well as one that will cater to those who need the help of service animals. The plans also include removing the old canopy.
Those council members who were unsure about the plan mentioned renting the facilities, but a suitable tenant has not been found. In view of this, it seems likely the renovations will eventually be undertaken.
Airport official might consider working with brochure printers, once renovations are complete, to create a booklet for area realtors to present to commercial clients.
