Military Appreciation Days is taking place throughout the entire month of May in Myrtle Beach, but there are a number of events taking place on the Memorial Day weekend.
According to the city's website, there is a 5K run this Saturday, May 24, beginning at 7.30 am. The run starts at the Boardwalk and Ocean Boulevard. Military personnel—whether they are active duty, reserve, National Guard, or veterans—can run free of charge while civilians pay $20.
The weekend's biggest event is the Memorial Day Parade. It begins at 10.30 am on this Saturday, and starts on Ocean Boulevard. This year's Grand Marshal is talk show host Montel Williams, who served as an enlisted man in the Marines, then went to Annapolis and became a naval officer.
After the parade, Myrtle Beach plans a Family Picnic on the site of the old Pavilion Amusement Park. There will be military exhibits, children's activities, and music, including a performance by the Andrew Thielen Big Band. Picnic-goers will also have a chance to meet Montel Williams.
Rounding out the weekend is the Memorial Day Ceremony, which takes place on Monday, May 26, at 11.00 am, at the Convention Center Plaza. It includes the Missing Man Table Formation—a table with places left empty in memory of missing personnel—and a 21-gun salute. Parking is free.
