Myrtle Beach college adding pastry kitchen

Students enrolled in the International Culinary Institute at Horry Georgetown Technical College in Myrtle Beach may soon be able to major in pastry arts and baking.

Recently, the area commission voted to offer an associate degree in applied science. If the state approves, the school could offer the degree in Fall 2017. Currently, it grants certificates in the field, but not the two-year degree.

The culinary institute’s executive director, Joseph Bonaparte, said the school had Geoff Blount build the program, noting that Blount, who is an educator as well as a pastry chef, had the credentials and the background to design an effective course of study. Blount said that although offering the certificate was good, a degree carries more weight, particularly when people go to lenders for money to start a business.

The school did an employment-needs assessment, and found that more than 300 jobs in the pastry and baking industry are expected to develop in Georgetown and Horry counties in the next three years. Blount pointed out the new program will feature a student-operated bakery, Layers, which will operate within the culinary institute. This will give students practical experience in baking and making pastry, as well as running a business, since the bakery will be open to the public.
