The Myrtle Beach Woman's Club was founded in 1966, and recently celebrated its 50th year of service to members of the community.
Over the course of its existence, the club has created a garden, raised funds for numerous causes, and donated money to more than 20 organizations, charities, and special needs groups in Myrtle Beach.
The club is currently working on getting a fourth canine for the Myrtle Beach Police Department. Ceil Whitney, the club's president, revealed that every club member is proud of the fact the organization had been able to supply the police with three canine officers in the past. It takes $8,500 to buy a dog, pay for its training, and support the additional training the dog goes through with its human police partner. The first dog the club gave to the police 10 years ago is getting ready to retire, and needs a replacement, Whitney said.
Each year, the club gives a number of scholarships, including one to a selected female student at each of four Myrtle Beach high schools. Club members recently found out that many firefighters and police take online courses, so they are giving a $1,000 scholarship to one police officer and one firefighter.
