Local airport has new director

This month, Chris Eldridge, the Horry County administrator, announced that Scott Van Moppes would be the new director of the Myrtle Beach International Airport.
Van Moppes replaces Pat Apone, who left the area in June to accept a post with the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. Since Apone's departure, Van Moppes has been acting as the airport's interim director; Eldridge made the position permanent with his announcement.

Eldridge praised Van Moppes for his hard work, dedication, and the way he approached tasks, taking on challenges to move to higher levels of responsibility. Eldridge also said that Van Moppes has 12 years of experience with airports, a solid knowledge of the various systems used by airports, and a desire to see airports in Horry County continue to improve and grow.

Van Moppes is a California native who came to Myrtle Beach in 1999. In 2004, he joined the team at Myrtle Beach International, working as the new terminal's technology manager. In 2015, he won accreditation as an airport executive, and served as assistant director for the airport.

For her part, Pat Apone took over as airport director in 2014, after working for the county for almost 10 years. During her time with the field, she oversaw runway resurfacing and the new terminal's completion. She also saw an increase in the number of passengers, as well as the expansion of the airlines providing service here.
