The Horry County Council, which represents the area including Myrtle Beach, has voted to create a commission to help prioritize the various road repair works that will be presented to county voters next year.
According to recent reports, the commission will have six members, three appointed by the county and three appointed by the League of Cities. The League is a group of leaders who come from various municipalities in the area. The three League appointees must include two from Myrtle Beach proper and one from North Myrtle Beach.
Much of the impetus for the creation of the commission comes from residents of Carolina Forest. The president of the Carolina Forest Civic Association, Carole vanSickler, said the group was not existent in 2006, when the county passed a sales tax of one cent to fund road works. Carolina Forest is now growing rapidly, and vanSickler wants to be certain its interests are represented in any decisions made.
A committee of 18 spent several months deciding what projects to pursue. The projects the committee settled on include repaving approximately 100 miles of roads in the county, paving about 100 miles of the county's dirt roads, and finding solutions for the traffic problems on U.S. 501 in Carolina Forest.
Carolina Forest officials might consider working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, explaining the commission's task and urging them to vote in November, 2016.
