Hip-hop station returns to air in Myrtle Beach

After months of being off the air due to technical problems, G105.5, a Myrtle Beach radio station that plays hip-hop artists who were famous decades ago, is broadcasting again.

The “throwback” station, which is owned by Dick's Broadcasting, plays songs by artists like Aaliyah, Destiny's Child, Jay-Z, 2Pac, and Biggie Smalls, most of whom were popular in the 1990s and early in the 2000s.

It does not appear to have been a problem with G105.5 that resulted in the hiatus, but trouble at another of Dick's Broadcasting's stations, WAVE 104.1. In 2017, there was a fire in a tower that housed equipment used to broadcast WAVE 104.1. According to Dick's Broadcasting spokesman Dick Harlow, that station was more profitable for the owner than 105.5, so the latter stopped broadcasting so the resources could be used to keep the more popular station on the air.

This February, Harlow said workers had to wait for good weather before they could install replacement equipment in the tower, causing another delay. Once that was complete, G105.5 went back on the air. However, earlier reports had suggested that the hip-hop throwback favorite would be broadcasting again soon after the New Year.

News like this is welcomed by many people, so operators might consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer making the announcement that services have resumed.
