Myrtle Beach residents and visitors have a new attraction to look forward to, since the city council recently approved an application by Eric McGee to operate a tethered balloon ride. The balloon will use helium, and rides will take place at the corner of Chester Street and 8th Avenue North, in an area at Skyrider Park.
Although McGee would like to make the attraction permanent, he'd like to test it first to see if the idea is practical. The city council agreed, and granted him two permits to hold a special event. Each permit is for 90 days, and the period will run consecutively. The lot where McGee will operate the attraction has been vacant for over five years, according to the Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Corporation's director, Lauren Clever. Posters are a clever way to advertise attractions like this, and operators can work with a poster printing company to create them.
McGee explained to members of the council that the balloon would remain tethered to the ground at all times. In addition, it will go no higher than 400 feet, and will stop operating if the winds are stronger than 28 mph. The balloon can hold as many as 20 people. The city council approved the permits unanimously.
