Grand Strand might be site of new neighborhood Walmarts

Myrtle Beach's Grand Strand might be the site of two of Wal-Mart's smaller stores, known as the Neighborhood Market.

The retail giant could open two stores along Kings Highway. If both stores are built, they would be the Grand Strand's third and fourth Walmarts.

Walmart spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said it is not unusual to find several stores from the same company within a small area. Henneberg says the company looks for areas where it's possible for them to offer their customers a greater variety of merchandise than they had before, as well as more affordable goods and a more convenient location. She notes that one of the stores, which would be located on 38th Avenue North, would help to revitalize the entire area. She goes on that the company has a solid base of customers in that area, and wants to provide more convenient shopping options to them.

Construction of one of the smaller Wal-Mart stores usually takes six to nine months after the proposal is approved. ADC Engineering Inc. has presented plans for both stores, which comprise 46,564 square feet each, to Myrtle Beach officials. ADC has proposed to put gas stations at both stores and pharmacies as well.

When the stores are open, managers might want to work with a banner printing company to create colorful streamers to celebrate the opening days at both locations.
