FootGolf gains ground on Grand Strand near Myrtle Beach

A new sport is getting a toe-hold at Meadowlands Golf Club in Calabash, about 25 miles fromMyrtle Beach.

According to a June 9th, 2014 news report, the club is bringing FootGolf to the region. The sport combines golf and soccer, and has the advantage of needing only a foot and a soccer ball for people to play. The rules of FootGolf are generally the same as regular golf, except the holes are much shorter, and the cups are much larger – to accommodate a 21-inch soccer ball.

Jason Monahan, Meadowlands' golf pro, says everyone at the course is very excited about the concept, since it's fun and combines two popular sports. Monahan expects to celebrate the FootGolf course's grand opening sometime around July 12th, when Meadowlands will open the course for public play. He notes, however, that people who come to play regular golf will have the right-of-way; the two sports will operate simultaneously.

Meadowlands – which is the only accredited FootGolf course within a four-hour drive of Myrtle Beach – will host an inaugural exhibition tournament Saturday, June 14th, starting at 1pm. The tournament format is a ‘best ball pro-am’, and a player from Myrtle Beach's professional soccer squad, the Mutiny, will join each team.

Meadowlands could work with a flyer printing company to create handouts for visitors, explaining the rules of the new game and listing the hours of play at the course.
