Developer proposes new apartments for Myrtle Beach

A developer has proposed building an apartment complex called “The Lively” near the Myrtle Beach area of Market Commons. The development would comprise four apartment buildings, with 224 multi-family housing units in three of them. The fourth building would have 56 units. Another building housing a car wash, storage facilities, and parking garages are also included in the plan.

Carol Coleman, the city's planning director, said people who live in the area have expressed some concerns about the proposal, but says this may be based on inaccurate information about what the project entails.

Some of the objections are due to the density the development would present, but Coleman notes that the density is within the guidelines provided by the planned unit development (PUD). The difficulty under discussion is whether or not the new project fits with the Market Common area's current image.

DDC Engineers is working with the developer, and Coleman says both the engineer and the developer are putting a great deal of effort into the project, making certain it will meet the standards set by the city and the community.

The plan was presented to the Myrtle Beach Community Appearance board in mid-August, where board members reassured residents the project would be tasteful and not have an undesirable impact on the area. It still has not been officially approved, which Coleman says is not unusual.

To keep residents informed, officials could publish Brochures showing the project plans in detail.
