The first-ever college football bowl game to be played in the state of South Carolina will be played in Myrtle Beach, starting in 2020.
According to a recent announcement, teams from three conferences will play in the Myrtle Beach Bowl: the Mid-American Conference; Conference USA; and the Sun Belt Conference. The annual event will be hosted by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, who are now playing in the Sun Belt Conference. The game will be played in Conway, at Brooks Stadium.
Coastal’s athletic director, Matt Hogue, said the school is honored to be part of such a historic event. The university will gain brand recognition from the game, and college football fans will be excited, particularly as the games are going to be shown on ESPN. Between 2020 and 2025, teams from the three conferences will have an opportunity to play in the bowl game a minimum of four times.
The announcement aligns with the school’s planned renovation of the stadium, which will have seats for 20,000 people by the time the 2019 season starts. Hogue said that having a bowl game played in Myrtle Beach shows how vital sports tourism has become to promoting the region.
