Residents of North Olmsted are getting excited about the planned opening of a Swensen’s in the city.
So why the excitement? According to Kim Lieber, the director of planning and development for North Olmsted, the anticipation has to do with more than the food—it’s the whole Swensen’s experience, which takes people back to an earlier time, when carhops worked at drive-in restaurants, like Swensen’s, and life seemed simpler. The company, a hamburger restaurant, dates back to 1934, when it operated mostly around Akron, Kent, and Canton.
Lieber revealed she’d also heard people saying they were glad they wouldn’t have to leave town to go to Swensen’s to buy their favorite “galley boy”, a double cheeseburger garnished with an olive, and doused in not one, but two sauces. Business Insider named the dish the “Best Burger in Ohio” in 2015.
Swensen’s will take over the space formerly occupied by Ari’s restaurant, which many people were sad to see close. However, Lieber believes that Swensen’s is so popular, and people are looking forward to it so eagerly, that it might compensate for the loss of Ari’s. She also hopes that having a “destination” restaurant will bring people from surrounding communities to explore North Olmsted.
Swensen’s hopes to open its doors in July 2018.
