Surprise delivered to Olmsted Meals on Wheels clients

This year, local Wheels on Meals clients received something special—extras along with their meals, and a friendly visit from a police officer.

Westlake-based Meals on Wheels serves clients there, as well as in North Olmsted, Olmsted Township, and Olmsted Falls. Recipients receive two meals daily Monday through Friday - one hot, one cold.

Wendi Schwartz, who is the executive director of the Meals on Wheels program in Westlake, teamed up with police officers from Olmsted Township to make the recent bonus deliveries. Not only did the teams deliver meals, they also handed out emergency kits comprised of nonperishable food that could last for several days, in case inclement weather meant Meals on Wheels would miss deliveries. A warm blanket was also part of the kit, as were ornaments and holiday place mats made by volunteer groups and schools. Finally, members of the Westlake Kiwanis Club went out and made special meal deliveries on Christmas day.

Schwartz said that her organization reached out to local police, since they seemed to be a natural resource to help deliver the meals, and the law enforcement personnel were delighted to help, saying the experience gave them a chance to live up to the “serve” part of their “protect and serve” motto.

Programs like this are vitally important, so organizers might consider working with a brochure printing company to create Booklets for area-wide distribution that explain the program.
