Safety first as area celebrates bike riding

Fairview Park is planning a safety fair for bicyclists.

The fair is open to residents of all ages, and will allow them to learn how to ride their bikes safely, get their bicycles inspected for safety issues, register their bikes, and get their helmets fitted properly.

There will be a number of vendors present, including Fairview Cycle, Bike Cleveland, the Fairview Park Police Department, Cleveland Clinic, Gilles-Sweet PTA, and AAA East Central. The police, recreation, and fire departments will give attendees safety tips, resources, and tricks.

Raffle tickets will be provided to children who attend the fair, giving them a chance to win a helmet. The Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) gave 96 helmets of differing sizes to the event organizers as part of its 2015 campaign for safety, called the ‘Put a Lid on It’ Bike Helmet Safety Awareness Program. A child who decorates his or her bicycle helmet will get a second raffle ticket.

Attendees are encouraged to ride their bikes to the event if at all possible, since parking is limited. The fair is slated for this Saturday, May 9, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, at Gilles-Sweet Elementary School. The school is in Fairview Park, at 4320 W. 220th Street.

Event organizers could work with a banner printing company on a banner to greet fair goers.
