North Olmsted sports centre explores geology

The 53rd Annual ROCKaRAMA Gem & Mineral Show will be held at the Soccer Sportsplex in North Olmsted next month.

ROCKaRAMA is a family-friendly geology expo organized by the Parma Lapidary Club that has several rock-related activities. Guests can visit the on-site gem mine, crack a geode, and partake in silent auctions. The convention also will have demonstrations for gemstone faceting, silversmithing, cabochon cutting, and creating wire wrap jewelry. The expo has a designated Kids Korner to entertain visiting children and will set up geology-related exhibits to explore.

The Parma Lapidary Club is a non-profit aiming to increase interest in subjects such as the metalworking arts, mineralogy, and paleontology. Several of the members collect rock specimens and create decorative objects. The organization is part of the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies and meets most months in Cleveland. The group holds field trips to educational places like the Seneca Caverns, LaFarge Quarry, and Little Pine Garnet Mine.

The geology expo will be held on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15. Doors to the event will open at 10:00 am. Adult admission into the convention will be $6 per person, and kids younger than 12 can enter for free. Those who attend in scout uniforms may also receive free admission. Themed expos such as this can be advertised to local motorists by using banner printing to produce colored outdoor signage.
