The City of Olmsted recently said that it is currently replacing two gas mains in the city, one on Lorain Road and the other on Dover Center Road.
The Lorain Road work is considered an emergency, as the gas main is leaking. The replacement line runs for about 500 feet, from the driveway to Giant Eagle east of McDonald's, west to the driveway of the Canary Restaurant. Dominion has contracted with Prusa to do the work, which was forecast to last less than two weeks, but no completion date has been announced.
The second gas main to be replaced is on Dover Center Road, but is not classified as an emergency. Dominion Gas plans to replace a gas main about 734 feet long, running from Cottonwood Trail to just past Newton Circle, along Dover Center's west side. Dominion's contractor on this project is Vallejo, and the company plans to locate the main beneath the sidewalk.
Vallejo plans to allow pedestrian access during the work by cutting through the sidewalk so they can install the main, leaving half the walkway for pedestrian traffic. The half of the sidewalk that is dug up will be leveled off with steel plates, pavement, or stone until the contractor has a chance to replace the entire thing, which will not be possible until the gas main installation is complete. Officials can use poster printing to warn pedestrians of the need to take care as they walk.
