The Ohio Department of Education sends out report cards to local school districts, and Fairview Park received its evaluation last month, earning an overall ‘B’. The report says the district met 20 of 24 stated indicators of achievement.
Dr. Bill Wagner, Superintendent, met with Board of Education members on September 16 to discuss the results, which he had been studying for some time. He said the results were not unexpected, and added they were not to be taken too seriously, but did provide valuable feedback to consider.
Wagner said the district was close to scoring higher than it did in several areas. He said that the marker is whether or not students achieve a year's worth of academic growth during a school year, and noted that math and reading were proving challenging for Fairview Park students. This year and last, the district was rated ‘D’, indicating that something has to be done to help students perform better in these subjects.
Wagner acknowledges there is a lot of room for improvement, but also says Fairview Park schools are used to fighting on many fronts at once, and emphasizes that the district is headed in the right direction, showing improvement over time.
Wagner and school officials might work with brochure printers to create a mailer for students and parents outlining the findings and what future challenges may be.
