Fairview Park gives parade a third try

Students of Gilles-Sweet Elementary School in Fairview Park are hoping it will be third time lucky for their bike parade.

Along with their parents and the city's mayor Eileen Ann Patton, the kids planned to participate in Bike to School Day on May 7, but the event was rained out. It was rescheduled for May 12, but got canceled again due to more heavy rains, this time coupled with tornado warnings. Another parade is scheduled for today, May 20, and everyone will no doubt be keeping their fingers crossed.

A safety presentation was held inside the school on the May 7 date. The assembly, which was sponsored by Fairview Park's Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Committee, covered such topics as wearing helmets while riding, obeying traffic laws, and taking safe bicycle routes.

The SRTS is made up of community and civic groups, parents, businesses, and residents. It plans and implements safe routes for kids to ride to get to the schools in Fairview Park. According to SRTS Project Coordinator Matt Hrubey, the event is sponsored by a number of organizations, including the City of Fairview Park, the Fairview Park SRTS Committee, and Fairview Park Schools.

This year, six bikes were raffled to student, two refurbished bikes were provided by the Ohio City Bicycle Co-Op, two came from Village Bicycle Cooperative, and two new bikes were donated by Fairview Cycle.

Parade and event organizers could work with a banner printing company to create flags to display at the event. Banners are dynamic and their movement would add to the festive feeling of the occasion.
