Volunteers, as well as city employees, planted 29 trees in Fairview Park recently.
The volunteers, who included Fairview Park Shade Tree Advisory Committee members, planted six trees near Eaton Drive around Bain Park. That same day, employees of the city’s Service Department, planted 23 trees along Parkdale Avenue.
The trees were planted in conjunction with a project underway to reforest part of the city where ash trees have been killed by the emerald ash borer. The ash borer is native to Asia, and kills ash trees anywhere from three to five years after they infest them. Every tree along Parkdale Avenue died as a result of the ash borer, and had to be removed because they presented a safety hazard.
Funds for planting the new trees came mostly from the Reforest Our City program of the Western Reserve Land Conservancy. A volunteer team, along with the city, prepared and submitted the application for the funding, with support coming in the form of a petition from homeowners along Parkdale Avenue.
The grant gave 29 trees from three different species to the city at no cost. The city provided the crew from the Service Department, planting supplies such as netting for protection from deer, and equipment to do the work.
