The holiday season got underway in Fairview Park on November 28, when the city celebrated its second Winterfest. The chilly weather did not put a damper on the fun.
The emcees for the event were Fox 8's Todd Meany and J.G. Spooner, from WKRK. Festivities began with the lighting of the city's Christmas tree, which stood beneath the clock tower near Fairview Parkway. Santa Claus came to visit with the children, and even brought some of his reindeer with him, giving them a break from their work at the North Pole.
An ice sculptor was on hand to show people how he carved his beautiful statues, which were dotted around the festival area.
There was live entertainment as well, with presentations by the Scarlet Singers from Fairview High School, and the Fine Arts and Theatre Association.
No winter celebration is complete without food, and Winterfest was no exception. Food trucks offered everything from burritos to calzones to barbequed pork, all freshly made. Others sold cupcakes and other goodies, and over a dozen booths provided games and crafts, while others held raffles. Admission for the evening was free.
Winterfest organizers could build on this year's success by working with brochure printers to create a booklet describing the event and distributing it to potential vendors, inviting even more of them to consider taking part next year.
