Students who feel unsafe traveling to and from school in Fairview Park now have additional resources to turn to if they feel uneasy, as several businesses have agreed to act as safe havens for students in these cases.
Fairview Park's ‘Safe Routes to School’ (SRTS) programs are collaborative, sustained efforts by the city, the schools, and the county board of health to look at conditions near schools, and devise activities and projects that improve accessibility and safety, while at the same time reducing traffic congestion and air pollution near schools.
The Safe Routes programs make walking and bicycling to school safer and more attractive, encouraging active living and a healthy lifestyle from a child's earliest years.
The SRTS committee asked 10 local businesses with early opening hours if they would act as safe havens to help students who felt unsafe at any given time. The business operators would remove the student from the situation and call his or her parents.
The businesses or agencies that agreed are the Fairview Park police, Dunkin Donuts, Subway, Fifth Third Bank, Giant Eagle, McDonald's, Troubadour Coffee Co., Gemini Center, Becker's Donuts, and CHC Physical Therapy. All are located on Lorain Road, and have highly visible decals on their windows or doors.
The SRTS committee could increase awareness by working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents describing the new safe havens, and where they are located.
