Students from central Ohio enjoy River Rats
Each summer, Ohio Wesleyan University offers gifted students from throughout central Ohio, including Lewis Center, the chance to choose from among dozens of classes that allow them to learn through experience. According to an article in This Week, one of those classes is Tom Bogard's River Rats, which takes place in Liberty Township, along the Olentangy River. Bogard, who teaches science at Berkshire Middle School, has been leading groups to the river for 19 years.
The River Rats get a chance to get their hands dirty with clay and rocks as they trek through river mud. Bogard said the students in his class enjoy the experience and become excited about the natural world. He notes that water is a vital part of daily life, and yet is sometimes overlooked. He believes it's important for students to learn about the ecology of water in streams and rivers.
Before starting out on a trek, Bogard briefs his class about safety on the river. He also warns them the class will not be easy, but he feels it's important to get the students outdoors where they can truly interact with the environment. Learning about river wildlife, flooding, and erosion is more fun when it's done that way, Bogard believes.
Events like this can be enhanced by a flyer printing company, which can create handouts providing important information for participants.
