What's Happening in Lewis Center, OH…

Area residents get ready for the fair

The time has come for the Delaware County Fair, which draws participants from throughout the area.

A traditional fair held just a few miles from Lewis Center, this event includes exhibits, demonstrations, and entertainment, including harness racing and motor sports, along with hundreds of vendors.

The event dates back to February 1833, when the state legislature encouraged counties to establish agricultural societies. The Delaware Agricultural Society was formed in June of that year, and met for the first time. Participants agreed to meet the following year, on July 4, 1834, and it was decided at that time that an exhibition should be held that October. The response to the event was overwhelming, and it was decided that another fair would be held the next year, forming a tradition that continues to this day.

This year, fairgoers can expect to find traditional events and exhibitions. Among these are livestock shows and sales, live music including a calliope, a martial arts demonstration, a watermelon eating contest, and even a chicken clucking competition. A tractor pull is also on the schedule, as is harness racing. The Little Brown Jug, a prestigious race for trotters, will be held during the fair.

The fair runs from tomorrow, September 17th, through the 24th at the site on Pennsylvania Avenue. Events such as these can be enhanced if organizers work with banner printing companies to create fun and colorful banners to display throughout the venue.
