A request for a zoning change by Carnegie Management and Development Corporation has Boardman abuzz about what might be going in on a wooded site along Route 224.
Jason Loree, Boardman administrator, said he had heard plenty of rumors, including a Cheesecake Factory and a Meijer’s. Officially, the Cleveland-based development company has asked for four acres near the corner of Tippacanoe Road and Lockwood Boulevard to be rezoned to commercial from residential for “possible commercial development use.”
According to Tom Costello, a Boardman trustee, Carnegie Management has a history of partnering with Meijer, leading to speculation that a new Meijer store is planned for Boardman. Eventually, with the help of a banner printing service, news about what is coming is spread to everyone passing by a construction site, but no one wants to wait that long.
The Mahoning County Planning Commission, which approved the zone change for 4 of the site’s 38 acres, is as much in the dark as Boardman officials as to what will be built. Carnegie Management said that they could not divulge what would be built due to a confidentiality agreement.
Assuming it is a Meijer store, it will likely be several years down the road. It was in 2015 that Meijer announced there would be an Austintown Meijer, and that store will not be opening until 2021.
