In the past two years, Boardman township officials have succeeded in having 16 dilapidated buildings razed, thus improving the appearance and property values of the neighborhoods in which they were located. At the July 28 meeting of Boardman Township trustees, Trustee Tom Costello expressed frustration that the process of condemning properties is taking so long.
Costello alleged that the hold up with ridding the township of these buildings lies with the county health department. He cited a lack of cooperation for delaying the process.
Mahoning County health commissioner, Patricia Sweeney, argued at a meeting with township officials on August 7 that there appeared to be confusion about the extent of the health department’s authority. Her department she said was doing everything within its power to move the condemning process along.

The township has five or possibly six demolitions on the horizon this year, assuming all the steps to condemning the properties can be completed in time. The expectation is that the demolitions will commence again in the fall when new grant money is dispersed, but some may need to be held over until the spring of 2015.
