The ongoing Canada geese problem for area residents has prompted Boardman Park to put together a seminar on conflict resolution pertaining to these birds.
Prior to the 1950s, Canada geese were infrequent visitors to Ohio, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). However, a program initiated by the Division of Wildlife sought to entice the birds to make Ohio their home.
The program was successful and what was once a rare occurrence has become commonplace, as Canada geese found a home here. In fact, it could be argued that the plan was too successful, with the birds going from nearly extinct to becoming so numerous as to be deemed a nuisance by many.
With this in mind, the services of a printing company will likely have to be employed to spread information on how to discourage them.
Last year, Mill Creek Park called in the ODNR to deal with their goose problem and 238 of the birds were euthanized. Boardman Park is not expecting to have a problem this year, but is offering this seminar to help area businesses and residents deal with their geese problems.
The seminar takes place in the Rotary Room at the Lariccia Family Community Center, Boardman Park from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm next Wednesday, April 29. It will be conducted by staff from the Division of Wildlife, and while free, pre-registration is required due to seating limitations.
