Local students march on in quiz competition

The quiz team at Boardman High School (BHS) has the 2016-2017 Mahoning League title under its belt, and is now ready to move on to the state tournament.

On February 25, the quiz bowl varsity team of BHS took the Mahoning League title for the third year in a row. Youngstown State University was the venue for the championship at which the BHS team defeated Poland, United, and Warren Harding high schools.

Boardman’s latest quiz bowl title is particularly impressive considering that the Mahoning League has grown to 24 teams. Teams compete by answering questions about history, literature, math and science. Now students can look forward to making the trip to Columbus for the state tournament on April 8 and, if all goes well there, the national tournament on May 27 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Coach Rand Nord praised her quiz team’s dedication, saying that in addition to practicing weekly at the high school the students have also created an online forum. Moreover, two of the 14 members spent part of their summer at ‘Quiz Bowl Camp’.

The BHS Quiz Bowl team is continuing to raise money to help pay for its trip to Columbus. Its track record of league titles, if included on Flyers or Posters advertising their fundraising events, will no doubt enhance its ability to raise funds for the next round of competition.
