The recent $2m award presented to Youngstown State University (YSU) by the U.S. Department of Commerce will be used for the construction of the Mahoning Valley Innovation and Commercialization Center (MVICC).
The money is part of the 2017 Assistance to Coal Communities initiative. The purpose of which is to help local recovery efforts wherever the declining demand for coal has adversely effected the local economy to a severe extent. It does this via programs that back workforce development or job creation.
The money will be used specifically to turn the former minimum-security Mahoning County jail into the MVICC site, where entrepreneurs, college students, high-school students, machinists, engineers, and welders can interact. Several levels of manufacturing education will be offer by partnering companies.
The project is still in the early planning and construction stages. Once the facility comes closer to opening Brochures detailing, the different skills available, as well as their marketability and details about the partnering companies, will likely be provided to potential students of the MVICC.
Subjects available will include welding, machining, industrial maintenance, 3-D printing, and robotics. Also being taught will be mechatronics - electronics combined with control, systems, computer and mechanical engineering, and CNC machining - controlling machine tools via computer.
The facility should benefit a variety of educational institutions in the area, as well as the Youngstown manufacturing community. Moreover, manufacturers in area communities such as Boardman will likely benefit as well.
