People interested in learning about the history of Christmas can view a virtual presentation offered by the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County in Boardman.
The 19th Century Christmas discussion is an event where viewers can discover which modern-day roots of the holiday can be found in the past. The presentation will analyze the songs, images, and traditions with origins in the 19th Century. The program will be held by Traci Manning, who is a Mahoning Valley Historical Society (MVHS) Curator of Education. Manning has written several pieces for the organization’s website covering topics such as the American flag and VE Day.
The MVHS was initially formed in 1875 during the First Annual Reunion of Pioneers of Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. The group’s purpose was to preserve the history and heritage of Mahoning Valley, dating back to the first settlement. Recognized as one of the leading cultural institutions in the Mahoning Valley region, the organization gained American Alliance of Museums accreditation in 1977.
The virtual discussion will be aired on Tuesday, December 15 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. There is no price to see the presentation, and the program will be hosted live on the library’s Facebook page.
