Education grants awarded to local foursome

A total of $4,500 in grant money was distributed to four teachers from Boardman Schools by the Boardman Schools Fund for Education Excellence (BSFEE).

Teachers at three Boardman Schools were awarded $1,500 each in grant money at a ceremony held in December at the Center Middle School office of Superintendent Lazzeri’s.

Tim Harker, a technology teacher at Glenwood Middle School, will use the money he was awarded to buy LittleBits tools for his classroom. Stadium Drive Elementary’s Brittany Krestel, a second-grade teacher, will put her grant money to use buying over 100 audio Books. The last $1,500 goes to Whitney Resch and Sharon Carchedi, two science teachers from Center Middle School for the purchase of iPads.

The Boardman Schools Fund for Education Excellence (BSFEE) provides funding for projects that will enhance the learning environment of students. The organization came into existence in 2009 to fund worthy projects the district could not afford and is under the guidance of the Community Foundation of Mahoning Valley.

Each September, all teachers are sent an invitation to apply for a teacher grant. On average, grants applications are submitted by 10-25 teachers each grant cycle. After being screened by a sub-committee, the best applications are sent on to the BSFEE Board for approval.

The notices teachers receive advising them of the teacher grants is just one example of the many uses schools have for printing services here in Boardman.
