Boardman residents can attend a virtual American Sign Language (ASL) Club meeting this September to celebrate the International Week of the Deaf.
The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will be hosting an ASL Club meeting to help people learn and understand sign language. The ASL Club is open to those of all skill levels, providing a digital space where members can be taught new Signs and discover other aspects of the language and culture. Libraries that offer educational programs such as this can use poster printing for advertising the event on their community bulletin boards.
The International Week of the Deaf is an initiative of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) that was originally launched in Rome, Italy during the 1950s. The event strives to promote the human rights of those who are deaf while raising awareness for the deaf community. There are different themes for the week every year, with past topics including strengthening human diversity, deaf people’s cultural achievements, and full inclusion with sign language.
The club meeting will be held on Thursday, September 24 from 6:00 pm to 6:50 pm. The session will be open to people of all ages. Those interested in joining the Zoom call must register in advance.
