Three initial interviews, conducted by trustees Tom Costello, Larry Moliterno, and Brad Calhoun, are currently taking place to evaluate the applicants for Boardman police chief.
The hour-long interviews of each of the dozen candidates were conducted in executive session, which means the public was not allowed to attend. In an executive session, personal matters of the interviewees can be explored according to Ohio law.
Applications were received from five police officers in the township and seven outside candidates. The field of candidates will be whittled down following the first round of interviews, but is not known at this time how many candidates will move on to the second round of interviews.
Each of the trustees will ask his own personally prepared questions to each interviewee. According to Calhoun his main concern is that the new chief will fully engage with the community, pointing out that that is one of current Chief Jack Nichols’ strong points. He is looking for someone who will attend forums, and take phone calls from community members.
The first two of these early interview sessions were held on May 1 and 4, and the third will be tomorrow, May 9.
It is hoped that several months before Chief Nichols retires in January, a new chief will have been named - ideally before the end of summer. The trustees would like to see the newly selected chief have an opportunity to shadow his predecessor before Stationery printers are swapping his name for Chief Nichols on the department’s letterhead.
