In June, Ohio will be holding its Envirothon state tournament and Boardman’s local team, which placed third out of 46 area teams, will be one of the top 20
teams competing.
Envirothon is an annual academic competition with an environmental theme. The competition is organized by the National Conservation Foundation (NCF) for high school students in the U.S. and Canada and is divided into regional, state and bi-national stages. In Ohio the top four teams in each of five different qualifiers compete for the state title.
The NCF Envirothon is divided into five parts, and designed to heighten interest in environmental issues and preservation of natural resources. It combines hands-on as well as in-class environmental education. Part of the competition involves delivering an oral presentation on a current topic. Each year students are tested in aquatic ecology, forestry, soils and wildlife and a current environmental issue selected for that year’s competition.
In addition to being an excellent addition to any college-bound student’s record of accomplishments, winning at any of these levels is beneficial to the teams’ city and school. Each entity will likely include it in materials sent to a printing company for promotional purposes.
At the all-Ohio competition, which will be held on June 12-14 at Bowling Green University, the Boardman H.S."A" team consisting of Mari Sulebi, Rita Sulebi, Pranava Padmanabhan, Justin Olsen and David Suarez will square off against 19 other teams for the Ohio Envirothon Championship.
