Colorful history
Elijah Boardman founded the community that still bears his name late in the 1780s. Although today, Boardman is considered mostly a suburb of Youngstown, it began as an agricultural settlement where grain crops were grown and apple orchards flourished. When the railroad came to town in the early 1900s, it was a direct link between Youngstown and Southern Park, a race track that had been built by a group of enthusiastic harness-racing fans from Cleveland. Known as the “Iron City Gentlemen”, the group selected Boardman because of the beauty of the area. The track flourished from about 1911 to 1925, and although it's gone today, Southern Park made Boardman a destination for sportsmen from Youngstown.
However, a stable from the early 20th Century is left and provides stabling for 16 or more horses, plus a warm-up track that circles a pond. Janie Jenkins, who once owned the stables, donated them to Boardman Township Park. In honor of her, the community has allowed the Mahoning County 4-H Club to use Southern Park Stables for their various programs. Business developments in Boardman
In 1964, Arby's chain of fast-food restaurants started in Boardman. The very first Arby's is still open, though it operates now as a different kind of store. However, there is a brand-new Arby's across the street. The operators of the store that took over the Arby's might consider working with a postcard printing company to create souvenir items describing the building's history.
In addition to Arby's, Boardman also boasts one of the first strip malls to open in the nation. Boardman Plaza, as the mall is known, was developed by Edward DeBartolo, Sr., who started his company in Boardman. Among its other tenants, Boardman Plaza had three full-service supermarkets, making it easy for everyone to shop for food. Today, residents have to drive to other stores, though this mall is still open. Later, DeBartolo developed Southern Park Mall, near the site of the old racetrack. Mall managers in the region could work with brochure printers to create mailers for commercial real estate firms, describing the amenities the site has to offer potential tenants.
Steel city
Around 1950, Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company opened a headquarters in Boardman. When the company closed in 1980, developers revitalized the campus to include new offices, many of them medical, plus retail establishments and a Youngstown State University branch. Mill Creek Park, one of the region's most popular venues, abuts Boardman. The park includes a rose garden, a golf course, a lily pond, and several waterfalls.
