Venison on the menu at Arbys

Hicksville diners curious about venison had a chance to try it recently, when the restaurant chain put venison sandwiches on its menu late in October.

The sandwiches featured a thick-cut, 5.5-ounce cut of venison steak, and was sold at Arby's in Bellmore, Lindenhurst, Hicksville (in the food court of the Broadway Mall), and East Meadow. According to Michael Vizza, a spokesman for the company, venison was on the menu at all of the company's restaurants, some 3,300 separate stores. The sandwich, which is the meat of grass-fed, farm-raised, red deer from New Zealand, is being introduced to celebrate hunting season.

The meat is marinated in salt, pepper, and garlic, then vacuum-sealed and cooked slowly for three hours. The venison is served on a toasted roll, with crispy onions and a Cabernet-wine based steak sauce. Last year, the sandwiches sold out within hours of the restaurants' opening, and Vizza was expecting a similar rush this time, anticipating a sell out by the end of the first day.

When asked to describe the taste of venison, Vissa said the meat is not too gamy but diners would still be able to tell they were eating something other than a beef steak.
